Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery School is one of seven schools which forms part of Tudhoe
Learning Trust. Situated in Newton Aycliffe, SWANS is a friendly and welcoming school that serves the
community.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated TA with PE Apprentice to work across all key
stages. The post is required from 1st September 2026 and is fixed term for up to 15 months including
EPA. The role is offered at 32.5 hours per week and on a term-time basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about sport, physical activity and making
a difference to children’s lives. The successful candidate will develop skills, knowledge and experience
in sports coaching, physical education, inclusion and classroom support whilst working alongside
experienced staff in a vibrant primary school. We are looking for someone who believes every child can
succeed and is committed to ensuring that every child is known, valued and championed.

As an apprentice you will:

  • Support the delivery of high-quality PE lessons across EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
  • Lead and support active play opportunities during breaktimes and lunchtimes.
  • Help organise and deliver extra-curricular sports clubs and enrichment activities.
  • Support pupils attending inter-school competitions, festivals and sporting events.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles, physical activity and positive participation for all pupils.
  • Work alongside teachers and support staff to ensure all children can access learning successfully.
  • Provide classroom support for individuals, groups and whole classes.
  • Support pupils with SEND, additional needs and barriers to learning, helping them to engage
    positively in school life.
  • Build positive relationships with children and act as a role model for behaviour, teamwork and
    resilience.

You will also develop an understanding of:

  • The benefits of physical activity and sport for individuals, families and communities, and why adopting an active and healthy lifestyle is important.
  • The basic principles of behavioural change when applied to sport and physical activity, and how to
    motivate and engage children.
  • The importance of effective leadership and coaching in the delivery of physical activity and sports
    sessions.
  • The role of inclusion in education and how to adapt activities to ensure every child can participate
    and achieve.
  • How schools support children’s social, emotional and educational development.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have 5 GCSEs at Grades A-C/9-4 (including English and Maths) or hold an equivalent and relevant
    qualification.
  • Have a genuine interest in sport, education and working with children.
  • Be willing to learn and participate in training and development.
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Be responsive and work flexibly.
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate patience, positivity and a commitment to inclusion.

This is a training opportunity and as such you will be assigned a school-based mentor. You will receive
on-the-job training and support in partnership with Go Well, with the training provider being
Educational & Sporting Futures.

This apprenticeship provides an excellent pathway into careers in teaching, PE, sports coaching, SEND
support, pastoral care and wider education.

Calculation of term time only
Term time only plus is calculated based on the following:

  • Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 39 weeks; plus
  • Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
  • Individual leave entitlement – 5.4 weeks (26 days) or 6.4 weeks (31 days)
    Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less
    than 5 years’ service will receive 26 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will
    receive 31 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
39 weeks (term time) + 26 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 45 weeks’ pay, to be paid in
12 equal monthly instalments
Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
39 weeks (term time) + 31 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 46 weeks’ pay, to be paid in
12 equal monthly instalments
